Space shuttle cockpit seattle7/23/2023 ![]() ![]() Get close to life under the sea at Seattle Aquarium (*1483 Alaskan Way, Pier 59 ) on the waterfront. On Bainbridge, multiple family-friendly cafes and restaurants (see page 81) offer the perfect rest and repast for a day trip. Older kids can appreciate the scenery, while younger ones will be awed by the boat experience. The view of the city skyline and Elliott Bay alone is worth the ticket price aboard a Washington State Ferries (801 Alaskan Way, Pier 52 wsdot.wa.gov/ferries) vessel to Bainbridge Island. Kids can conquer the 35-foot climbing tower, careen down a colossal tube slide, navigate a maze painted on the ground, or manipulate the child-inspired musical instruments and listening stations. Tucked beside the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) (*325 Fifth Ave N )-where immersive exhibits like the VR-style Holodome and the interactive Sound Lab engage tweens and teens-the Artists at Play (*305 Harrison St ) playground is a treasure trove of delights. With more than seven miles of trails, families can choose their own adventure-through peaceful forests and meadows, up to unrivaled views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, or down to the beach for tidal explorations. The cool thing about the trainer module is that people will be able to walk inside it and see how the Space Shuttle’s were fitted out and see where all shuttle astronauts were trained to crew it into space.Commune with nature at Discovery Park (3801 Discovery Park Blvd), the largest park in Seattle. Once all deliveries are complete the Space Shuttle trainer will be fully reassembled and will be displayed in the museum’s new Charles Simonyi Space Gallery. Preparing to unload The nose door begins to open OK the door is open, let’s get the Shuttle Trainer out of there The Tunner Loader does it’s job The Shuttle Trainer nose section is successfully unloaded The Tunner Loader is on the move The Space Shuttle trainer nose section was carefully packed to protect it during the long flight The belly of the Super Guppy Then after the official hand over ceremony, the big door (the nose of the Super Guppy) was opened and the shuttle trainer nose was slowly removed by the NASA crew with the assistance of the US Military and their huge Tunner loaderthat was then used to take the nose to its new home. Upon landing the Super Guppyhad to be refueled to ensure the weight balance was correct before the nose of the trainer could be unloaded. NASA base the aircraft in Houston, Texas. Officially called the Aero-Spacelines B-377-SGT Super Guppy Turbine it is the last of its kind still in operation and is powered by 4 Allison 501-D22C turbo-prop engines, it is basically a hybrid aircraft made with components of the Boeing 377 (cockpit, wings, tail and main landing gear), new fuselage parts and a modified nose wheel from a Boeing 707 (the first variant flew in 1965 but this one was built in 1983 and was the last one produced). To deliver such a large component they needed to use their Super Guppytransport aircraft (this was the first of a number of flights that will take place to deliver all the components of the Space Shuttle Trainer). Today NASA delivered the nose section of the Space Shuttle trainer to Seattle’s Museum Of Flight.
